Keeping Kids Active

October 29th 2018

Health benefits for kids

Did you know, it is just as important for children to keep as active as it is for adults? In fact, some may argue it is even more important as it will set them good habits for later on in life. On top of all the amazing health benefits keeping children active has it also will have some perks for you as parents such as your little ones sleeping better, having stronger bones and can even help improve their concentration when learning.

The NHS recommend that children under 5 should not be inactive for long periods of time except when asleep. Long periods of inactivity include being strapped into a buggy or car seat or watching more than 8 hours of TV a week, there is a lot of research and evidence that inactivity can increase risk of poor health.

So how can Horizon Leisure Centres help to keep your little ones active? Well, the list is almost endless!

Splash pools

Swimming has a whole range of health benefits especially when started young! Including helping to build endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness, as well as helping to maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs.

Our 13m splash pools are suitable for any age (as long as babies have had their first set of jabs) and are maintained at a slightly higher temperature than the main pools making them perfect for babies and younger children, come and get those legs kicking and make a splash!

Educational play centres

Not only are our play centres super fun and super-sized… they are educational too!

World of play allows children to explore famous landmarks like the Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty not forgetting the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Then we have Oceans of play where children can climb aboard the ship with 4 levels of fun, the top two floors are the ship with the bottom two floors being an underwater theme and that’s just for the older children.

The littler ones have a separate toddler area where they can pretend to go to depths of oceans, play with colourful fish and ride with the soft seals. That’s bound to keep the kids running, crawling and climbing for at least an hour!

There are many social benefits of attending groups, but the biggest benefit is your little ones being able to run free! Our groups are held in our large sports halls so there’s plenty of space to run, jump and even climb on all the apparatus. Our groups are on for an hour and a half so that’s half the daily recommended amount of time a toddler should be active throughout 24 hours.

Birthday parties

Birthdays are an exciting time for children and Horizon Leisure Centres are here to lend a helping hand with lots of different party options from bounce parties, inflatable swim parties, team games party and lots more! If you’re struggling to peel your children away from their favourite TV show then maybe a birthday party at Horizon will give them a taste for what we have to offer here and get them wanting to run around in our fun facilities more often! Winner!

Teen Gym Sessions

For the older ‘youngens’ we offer teen workout sessions in our gym for 10 – 15 year olds. After the first teen workout session and induction, participants can return to use the fitness machines to burn calories and enjoy exercising in the gym by themselves during the specified teen sessions. All teen sessions are fully supervised by a gym instructor.

So with all that in mind, we hope we can help as much as possible with keeping your little ones active and look forward to seeing you soon!

Help Relieve Stress Through Exercise

October 18th 2018

Help relieve stress through exercise

Life is stressful isn’t it? It seems that no matter what you do you just can’t help but feeling stressed at one point during the week, if you’re lucky!

Sometimes all you want to do is hide away for just an hour to re-charge and then you can get on with the week again feeling a little more energised. Did you know that one of the best ways to de-stress and re-charge is through exercise? Yep, you heard right!

I’m sure for many people the gym is the last place you think about going when life gets a bit too much, but it really is the best place, and here’s why.

Exercise increases your endorphins.

Endorphins are a chemical that your brain produces which trigger a positive feeling in your body. Physical activity helps to increase the production of endorphins in your brain helping you to feel good.

Running, playing a good game of tennis or badminton or anything energetic will increase your endorphins making you feel more positive and re-energised!

It does wonders for your mind.

It might seem strange talking about your mind in an article about exercise, but exercise is amazing for your mind as well as your body!

After a great workout in the gym or a swim in the pool you’ll often find that you’ve forgotten about most of the things that have irritated you during your busy, stressful day.

Regular exercise will help you release your tensions and feel more relaxed meaning you’ll feel much more optimistic in your day to day life and find it easier to stay calm in those high pressure situations.

It improves your mood and sleep.

More and more people are feeling anxious on a regular basis and the fast paced, stressful lifestyle that many of us have doesn’t help, but in most cases, it’s unavoidable. Regular exercise can increase self-confidence, it can relax you, and amazingly, it can lower the symptoms associated with mild depression and anxiety.

Sleep is a huge problem for most of us when going through a stressful time in your life or you’re feeling particularly anxious about something, but yes, you guessed it, exercise can improve your sleep! Physical activity helps you to clear your mind and release stress and tension helping you to get a better night’s sleep, who doesn’t want that?!

All of these exercise benefits can ease your stress levels and help you to stay calm in high pressure situations helping to relive the symptoms of stress related illnesses. And hey, if it can help you get a better night sleep then who can argue that it’s not good for you?

So, next time you’re feeling stressed, worried, or anxious about things that are happening in your life, why not try relieving some of those feelings in the gym, swimming pool, tennis court etc. Making exercise a regular thing will help you to stay feeling energised and less tense.

Try it today, it might change your life!

Why personal training is perfect for beginners

Why personal training is perfect for beginners

Just signed up to the gym, tick. New trainers, tick. New water bottle? Tick. List of goals? Double tick. Know where to start? *Scratches head and shrugs shoulders*

Knowing where to start can be totally mind boggling and actually put you off going to work out before you’ve even had a chance to lace those new trainers up. You’ve heard of a personal trainer, but do you know just how beneficial they can be, especially to beginners? Take off your trainers for 5, pull up a seat and have a read below on how our Personal Trainers can really help you to get into the swing of all things gym.

We are all guilty of saying we are going to do something productive and then not actually doing it, the gym probably being the main one. Setting your alarm for 6.30am and having your stuff ready sometimes just isn’t enough to stop you from snoozing 10 times over. Having a personal trainer is really beneficial in ensuring you fully commit and stick to your goals. You are way more likely to get yourself in gear and get to the gym if you have a time and date set with your PT. If you skip your Personal Training session it won’t just be yourself you are letting down!

Form good habits

Even people that have been strutting their stuff in the gym for months can pick up bad habits but getting a Personal Trainer on hand can help to point you in the right direction to stop any bad habits forming. Moving forward this will keep you from any injuries but also make sure you are seeing the results you are working hard for. There’s nothing worse than thinking you are doing an exercise right only to be doing it wrong and not see the full results that you deserve.

Looking on the internet for workouts or taking tips from a friend is all well and good, but can you be sure these are the right fit for you, your body shape, goals and lifestyle? Having a Personal Trainer is great because they can find out about your individual needs and tailor a programme specifically for you and the end results you are wanting to achieve. It’s also equally important that you are not doing workouts that you really hate, you may be able to do squats but if you don’t like them you aren’t going to enjoy your time at the gym. Personal Trainers can help to give you alternative exercises that also fit in with your goals.

Make the most of your time

So you’ve dragged yourself out of bed, at the gym for opening time and ready to workout, only you find yourself 20 mins into your 1 hour session before work and your still sat on the bike, with only 6 minutes clocked up of actual exercise time! It can be very hard to make every minute count and that’s where, yet again, Personal Trainers come in very handy. They are there to maximise your time and really make sure you are getting the most out of your sessions, nothing gives a PT more satisfaction than helping you to reach your personal goals!

So, if you feel like any of the above apply to you, why not take a look at Horizon’s Personal Trainers a bit closer and see how they can help you today!

Benefits of drinking water

August 10th 2018

Benefits of drinking water

For a lot of people, drinking water and enough of it, can be a struggle. It is recommended by the NHS that we drink 1.2 litres of water a day, that’s 6 – 8 glasses per day. When you have a hectic lifestyle or are always on the go, it can be very hard to drink that many glasses in a day, let alone remember to!

So we thought at Horizon we’d share the benefits of drinking water, which may just stop you forgetting to drink your daily dose!

Good for your skin

Ever heard the saying look after yourself from inside to out? Well it is totally true in this case, drinking plenty of water can help to, moisturise your skin, keep it fresh, soft, glowing and it is also said to get rid of wrinkles, a lot cheaper than a bag full of lotions and potions!

Boosts immune system

If you’re a regular water drinker, you are less likely to get ill! Water helps to fight off things like flu, help to prevent some types of cancer and also reduce your risk of heart attack. Who’s reaching for the water right now?!

Keeps your joints moving

Are your joints feeling a little stiff or achy? Chances are you’re not drinking enough water, although this doesn’t apply to everyone, it can be the case for many!

Joints are surrounded by something called cartilage, this allows each bone to move freely. Cartilage can be up to 85% water, which helps to prevent your joints from rubbing together.

Where does water intake come into it? When you’re dehydrated your body draws as much water as it can towards your vital organs needed to keep you alive, unfortunately for your cartilage, it has to give up its water!  So top up your fluids and stop the creaking in those knees.

Encourages you to eat less

Do you find yourself constantly snacking throughout the day? A glass of water could help to stop that, which in turn is going to stop you piling on the pounds with unnecessary snacks. Drinking plenty of water also helps to raise your metabolism.

We hope a few of those benefits to drinking water get you reaching for a bottle more often now, and don’t forget 1.2 litres a day is the recommended daily intake!

Why Parents Secretly Love Soft Play Centre

July 27th 2018

You often hear the moans and groans of parents when it comes to soft play centres, “It’s too noisy”, “There’s too many kids”, “They could be running around outside for free”, we get it there are a few bug bares in the world of play centres, BUT, we also know more parents than not that secretly love them and here we are going to tell you why.

You get to relive your youth

If you didn’t visit soft play when you were little, you really are missing out. The days of sweaty faces from playing hide and seek with your brand new bestie’s you’d met at the slides 10 minutes prior, the mixed flavour slush puppies you’d beg for to cool you down after a session of running wild, and not forgetting the mirrors that make you look all different shapes and sizes.

If you’re children haven’t reached the stage of ‘Please don’t cramp my style Mum’ and pretending they are out on their own at the age of 6, then what better of an excuse to get in the ball pit or race them down the slides. Don’t forget to pinch a slurp of their slush puppie when your children aren’t looking!

Down time

Ok so it’s not relaxing on the sofa with day time TV and some chocolate biccies in your PJs kind of ‘down time’ that you’ve been craving since the kids were born! But it is at least 30 minutes of you not personally having to try and entertain the children, you have ropes and slides to do that for you. So why not grab a cup of tea or soft drink of your choice and make the most of the free Wi-Fi Horizon Leisure Centres have to offer.

A fuller night sleep (Hopefully)

So you’ve had your little down time whilst they were running riot round the equipment, now for the best part, (this is a right treat) the children have had so much fun and burnt off so much energy, they may just sleep through the whole night, or surprise you with a little lay in! We’ll see you for the rest of the holidays then?!

Have a chat to other parents

Just when you started to think you’d forgotten how to talk anything other than baby babble, or Pokémon characters with your 8 year olds, you meet some other parents that you find you actually have a lot in common with and are also hanging out at soft play to regain a little sanity! Take their number, add them on Facebook, or just hope to see them in here again next time, but always remember you’re not on your own and it’s healthy to have a chit chat with other adults!

Grabby hands are safe

Hands up if your child is like one of those grabbing machines at the fair? It’s always the things they are not supposed to have that they get their little hands on, not to mention the full blown meltdown when you take something off them for their own safety! At Horizon soft play centres there are baby areas for your little ones to grab whatever they like without having to go through the whole tantrum malarkey, so although as a parent you are never fully off ‘guard’ you can relax just that little bit more.

We have 2 educational soft play centres here at Horizon Leisure Centres. Oceans of play where children can climb aboard the ship to start their adventure and explore the oceans, or World of play where children can travel the world visiting different countries and famous landmarks, not only fun but educational too! We understand keeping children busy and tummy’s full can be expensive so we also offer play and eat prices. We look forward to seeing you soon.

5 Tips To Help You Get Summer Fit

July 16th 2018

Yes, that’s right, spring is here already and we sure are welcoming the arrival of summer nights, lighter evenings, BBQ’s, cocktails in the sun and dipping our feet in the kid’s paddling pool to keep cool! But are we feeling ‘summer body ready though’? Nuu-uhh, no way, not at all.

Although we still have a little while until the summer sun is here, we’re very aware that just like spring, summer will creep up on us in no time, which means if we want to be feeling body confident in our summer wardrobes, the dreaded workouts need to be in full flow… ummm, yesterday!

Ok, so we understand it’s not that easy! That’s why we are here to give you some top tips on helping you to feel happy with your ‘bod’ all summer long.

So sign up for your gym membership and join us in getting beach ready!

Don’t just set weight loss goals

It probably goes without saying your number one goal is weight related, weather that’s to tone up those ‘jiggly bits’, lose weight or gain weight but why not set yourself some bigger goals? How about improving your personal best, 20 more pull ups by the end of the summer? 20 more squats each week? Raising your fitness levels? Whatever it may be, don’t just go with the standard weight related goals! Stop focusing on the number that appears on the dreaded scales, instead motivate yourself with achievable yet challenging goals and you’ll soon start seeing positive changes along the way – mind and body!

Change the way you eat

It’s a well-known fact that you can’t out train a bad diet… (boooo). Now, we’re not talking about making a mad dash for the supermarkets straight away to stock up on nothing but curly kale because that’s just not going to work and will actually do you more harm than good. We’re talking about finding the right balance and making the right food choices. Start introducing super foods into your diet like avocados, blueberrys, oily fish and tomatoes to name a few.

Partial to an afternoon snack? Stock up on healthy alternatives to help curb those cravings and help you resist that sugary snack all for a quick energy boost.

Don’t forget to visit our Meet & Eat Café Havant and Waterlooville! We have a range of tasty homemade classics and healthy grab and go options along with a brand new spring menu!

Keep a record of progress

It can be disappointing when you’re working hard and not instantly seeing results. So a good idea is to keep a diary of your daily or weekly progress. You’re not going to see a dramatic change overnight, after all Rome wasn’t built in a day, but you are going to notice other positives, and the small wins all add up! Why not jot down things like stamina increase, have you been to extra aqua classes this week? Tried a new exercise programme out of your comfort zone? Increased the weight size you lift? All these ‘little’ things are achievements and all part of your journey to getting summer fit so get them written down and be proud of yourself!

If you’re ever having a day of negativity towards working out, flick through and remind yourself of the work you are putting in and the progress you are making. Don’t forget to take before during and after pictures, even if only for yourself, this will help you to notice your progress even more and you can look back and see just how far you have come.

Plan in advance

Keeping organised is key you are more likely to stick to a regime if plans are put in place, whether thats getting your gym gear ready the night before, prepping your lunches to avoid snacking on unhealthy calorific snacks, or even just scheduling which days you are going to go to the gym. You’ll notice more of a positive mind-set too! Leaving things until last minute can become stressful and un-motivating causing you to miss a gym sesh or eat junk food all because you haven’t spent a few extra minutes setting yourself up for the week ahead.

List the reasons you want to shape up

It’s all well and good deciding you want to shape up for summer, but sometimes that just isn’t enough to see you through your tough journey to summer fit, write down the reasons why you want or need to start and remind yourself of them as much as possible. Do you have a dress or shirt that you love but can no longer get into? Is it for health reasons? Are you training for a marathon? Or how about just feeling a bit more confident on your summer hols this year! Whatever it is be sure to list as many of them as possible to help keep you as motivated and determined as possible!

So there it is, a few handy tips to keep in mind when starting the long and winding road to getting fit and healthy this summer with Horizon. If you need that added boost and extra support pop in to either Havant or Waterlooville Leisure Centre and speak to one of our friendly gym instructors about your fitness goals and how we can help!

We love to hear your tips, tricks and progress of your fitness journey this summer, so drop us email or pop a comment on our social media pages and most of all GOOD LUCK!

5 Fitness Quotes to Get You Motivated

June 28th 2018

So, it’s Monday morning, you wake up at 5.30am, jump out of bed straight into your gym clothes, run out the door and skip all the way to the gym where you have a great workout burn hundreds of calories, shower, get ready and get to work all in time for 8.30am. Right? Wrong!

I’m guessing that for most of us normal human beings that sounds like something that happens in our dreams on Sunday night but when the dreaded Monday morning arrives, it is faaaar from reality! Well don’t worry, you’re not the only one!

If you’re lacking in motivation and need something to help you get into the gym and get that workout done and dusted then why not take a look at some of these inspirational, motivational quotes to help get you moving…

“How many Mondays have been and gone since you said ‘I’ll start next week’? Take action, start today.”

We’re all guilty of this aren’t we? We have a ‘bad weekend’ eating whatever we like and sitting in the garden all day (when we have the chance), or on the sofa in front of our favourite programmes promising ourselves that we will start the strict fitness regime on Monday and stick to it for at least 3 months, but it never seems to go to plan. Well why not break habit and actually ‘start Monday’ this time around? Once you take the plunge and get to the gym you will find it much easier to keep on going back and you never know, you might change that bad habit into a good one.

“You are one workout away from a good mood.”

Have you ever had one of those days where you’ve just woke up in a bad mood and nothing seems to be going your way? We’ve all been there. Instead of going home and eating a tub of ice cream in front of Eastenders, why not go to the gym? I know it sounds CRAZY but exercise is one of the best ways to let off steam and relieve stress. Put your headphones in and drown out the world while you focus on putting all of your energy into your workout – you will feel so much better afterwards!

“All great achievements require time.”

It can be so disheartening when you set a goal and try your hardest to achieve it but it just feels like you are never going to get there. Stop being so hard on yourself. Anything worth doing takes time and perseverance. Every time you go to the gym, do an exercise class, go for a swim or do any form of exercise it is another step towards your end goal, don’t give up, keep striving and you WILL get there in the end! You will thank yourself in the future.

“The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen.”

So it’s Wednesday evening again and you just can’t stop thinking about how slow the week is going and how far away the weekend still feels. You know you should go to the gym like you promised yourself you would this morning, but you’ve had a stressful day and you just can’t be bothered now. This is the perfect time to get to the gym and make yourself proud. Even if you don’t get as much done as you normally would, you still went, you kept the promise that you made to yourself and you worked out! Go you!!!

“Don’t limit your challenges, challenge your limits.”

What so many people lack is self-belief, we all seem to have a fear of pushing ourselves and finding out what we are truly capable of just in case we fail. Exercise can help you to build on your self-confidence and achieve things that you never thought were possible. Do something today that your future self will thank you for, test your limits and you might just surprise yourself.

So, if these quotes have inspired you to get out and get in the gym why not pop into Horizon and let the gym staff help you start your fitness journey today? There really is nothing holding you back!
