
Swim School Stage Descriptions
Our swimming lessons follow Swim England’s trusted framework and are tailored to suit every age and ability, all within a safe and encouraging environment. Below, you’ll find a breakdown of each stage, from pre-school to adult, so you can easily identify the right level for you or your child.
Pre-School Framework

Parent & Child 3 months – 1 year
Introduce your baby to the water with our engaging and nurturing swimming lessons. We focus on creating a joyful experience through songs, games, open play, and a variety of fun activities. Our sessions are designed to gently build water confidence and lay the foundations for early swimming skills.
Parent & Child 1 – 2 years
This course continues to build water confidence while gently introducing water safety awareness. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for your little one to enjoy a social environment, developing both water skills and social confidence in a supportive setting.
Parent & Child 2 – 3 years
In this course, we focus on developing and encouraging independent swimming skills through carefully structured lessons tailored to each child’s ability. Swimmers will build on their water confidence, learn to move more freely without support, and begin developing basic techniques such as floating, kicking, and arm movements.
Parent & Child 3 – 4 years
In this course, children will build their confidence and develop independent swimming skills while working towards the Swim England Duckling Awards. Our fun, engaging approach ensures that each child progresses at their own pace in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Learn to Swim Framework

Stage 1
This is our entry-level stage, designed specifically for non-swimmers and those who may be less confident in the water. It provides a gentle introduction to swimming, with a focus on building trust, water confidence, and basic movement skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Stage 2
This stage is designed for water-confident children who are still at the beginner level. It is ideal for swimmers who are able to float, submerge, and jump into the water independently, and are ready to start developing early stroke and coordination skills in a structured learning environment.

Stage 3
This stage is for water-confident children who can independently swim 5 metres on their front and back without the use of flotation aids. The focus is on refining technique, building stamina, and introducing more structured stroke development in a supportive and engaging environment.

Stage 4
This stage is designed for children who can confidently swim 10 metres unaided on both their front and back. Swimmers at this level will demonstrate basic kicking technique, streamlining, and rotational skills, as they continue to develop efficiency and coordination in the water.

Stage 5
This stage is for children who can competently swim 10 metres, demonstrating basic swimming strokes and performing efficient kicks across all four strokes. At this level, swimmers will focus on improving stroke technique, endurance, and overall swimming efficiency in a more structured and challenging environment.

Stage 6
This stage is for children who can proficiently swim 10 metres using front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimmers at this level will also focus on performing efficient sculling and treading water skills, further enhancing their technique, stamina, and overall swimming proficiency.

Stage 7
This stage is for children who can efficiently swim 20 metres using full strokes with correct breathing techniques. Swimmers will also focus on mastering a range of personal survival skills, building confidence in their ability to swim long distances and handle a variety of water situations with safety and control.
Aquatic Skills Framework

Stage 8
This stage is for children who have successfully completed all 7 stages of the Learn to Swim Framework and can confidently swim 25 metres using all four strokes with efficiency. They are also capable of performing a 100-metre continuous swim, demonstrating a variety of strokes and showcasing their swimming endurance and skill development.

Stage 9/10
This stage is for children who are looking to refine their stroke technique, increase speed, and build endurance. Swimmers at this level can efficiently swim 50 metres using three different strokes and perform a 400-metre continuous swim in one stroke, further enhancing their swimming capabilities and fitness.

Waterpolo
This stage is for children who have completed Stage 7 and are working towards Swim England Stages 8, 9, and 10 of the Water Polo framework. Water polo is an exciting and dynamic sport that offers a fantastic opportunity to continue in aquatics. Swimmers will develop essential skills such as passing, shooting, and defending, while enjoying friendly gameplay that fosters teamwork, strategy, and fitness in the water. It’s a great way for children to challenge themselves and take their aquatic abilities to the next level!

Artistic Swimming
This stage is for children who have completed Stage 7 and are working towards Swim England Stages 8, 9, and 10 of the Artistic Swimming framework. Artistic swimming is an exciting and creative sport that combines swimming, dance, and gymnastics. Swimmers will focus on mastering essential skills, such as synchronized movements and breath control, while working on fun and dynamic routines. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to continue developing their aquatic abilities in a fun and expressive way!

LifeSaver
The RLSS Rookie Lifeguard course is designed to introduce young swimmers to essential lifeguarding skills in a fun and engaging way. This course teaches key water safety, rescue techniques, and first aid skills, while promoting teamwork and confidence in the water. Participants will develop a range of practical skills that are vital for water safety, setting the foundation for more advanced lifeguarding qualifications in the future.
Adult Framework

Adult Beginner
For adults just starting out, this class focuses on teaching basic water skills and providing an introduction to the pool. The goal is to build confidence in the water while developing foundational skills in a supportive and relaxed environment. By the end of the course, participants will aim to swim over 5 metres unaided on both their front and back, marking an important milestone in their swimming journey.
Adult Improver
For adults who can swim 10 metres in basic front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke, and are able to complete 25 metres in one stroke, this class focuses on improving stroke technique and building stamina. The course also aims to boost confidence in deep water, helping participants refine their skills and increase their overall swimming ability.
Adult SwimFit
For adults who can swim 400 metres continuously, this coached session focuses on developing efficient swimming strokes and improving endurance. Participants will work on refining their technique, building strength, and enhancing overall swimming performance in a structured, goal-oriented environment.
