Mental Health Awareness Month: You don’t have to feel okay to start

Some days are just harder than others, and sometimes there isn’t a clear reason why.
There isn’t always a clear reason. You might feel flat, overwhelmed, or just not quite yourself. And on those days, even the smallest things can feel like a lot.
We understand that.
At Horizon, we’re not here to tell you to “push through it” or suddenly become your best self. Mental health doesn’t work like that. It’s not a quick fix, and it doesn’t follow a straight line.
What we can offer is something simpler. A place to show up, exactly as you are.
You don’t need a plan. Just a starting point.
For some people, that might be a gym session.
For others, it’s sitting at the side of the pool for a few minutes before deciding to get in.
Or joining a class and staying at the back, just taking it in.
There’s no right way to begin.

It’s easier with someone beside you
If coming in on your own feels like too much, you’re not alone in that.
A lot of people start by bringing someone with them. A friend, a partner, even just someone to walk through the door with.
You don’t have to train hard or have a perfect plan. You might just:
- Do a short workout together
- Try something new and laugh your way through it
- Or sit and chat afterwards, knowing you showed up
Sometimes it’s not about what you do, it’s just having someone there.
If you already have someone in mind, inviting them along can make that first step feel a little easier. And if you’re both starting out, you’ll figure it out together.
Support when you need it
If you’re not sure where to start on your health journey, or you’d feel more comfortable with a bit of guidance, our Wellbeing Hub is there to help you find your way.
It’s not about pressure or expectations. It’s about helping you find something that feels manageable.
Some structure, some support, and people who understand that everyone’s starting point is different.
We’re here when you’re ready
Whether that’s today, next week, or sometime down the line.
Whether you stay for ten minutes or an hour.
Whether you speak to someone or keep to yourself.
Our spaces in Havant, Waterlooville and Guildford are here for you, in whatever way you need them.
If bringing someone along feels like the right first step, head to our refer a friend page and get started together.
