The Mental Health Benefits of Exercise

Every year on 10 October, the world comes together to raise awareness and support around mental health. World Mental Health Day reminds us that wellbeing goes far beyond physical health. It is about the mind, body, and the connection between them.
At Horizon Leisure, supporting mental health is central to everything we do. Across our centres in Havant, Waterlooville, and Guildford, we help our community stay active and thrive in everyday life. Exercise is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve wellbeing, and with dedicated spaces like our Wellness Hub and inclusive activities across our sites, we are proud to provide a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
How Exercise Supports Mental Wellbeing
The mental health benefits of exercise are widely recognised. Even a short burst of movement can release endorphins, the natural “feel-good” hormones that reduce stress and lift your mood. But the advantages go much deeper than that.
- Reduced stress and anxiety: Regular activity helps lower stress hormones and gives your mind a welcome break from daily pressures.
- Improved sleep: Exercise can help regulate sleep patterns, which are vital for emotional balance and recovery.
- Boosted self-esteem: Achieving small goals, like completing a workout or learning a new skill, builds confidence and self-worth.
- Increased social connection: Group exercise, swimming lessons, or simply meeting a friendly face in the gym can reduce loneliness and create community.
The mental health benefits of exercise are not limited to intense training or long sessions. What matters most is finding what makes you feel good, whether that is a relaxing yoga class, an energising swim, or a gentle walk on the treadmill.

The Horizon Wellness Hub
Our Wellness Hub at Havant Leisure Centre is designed to support people living with long-term health conditions, including mental health challenges. The space features specialised equipment, a calm atmosphere, and staff trained to offer personalised guidance.
Many people find the Wellness Hub a comfortable starting point when building confidence to exercise. The focus is always on improving wellbeing at your own pace. For some, it has become an important part of managing stress, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.
The Wellness Hub is open to anyone looking for a gentler, more supported approach to fitness. It is a space where small steps make a big difference.
Classes and Activities That Support Mind and Body
We know that different types of activity support mental health in different ways. That is why we offer a wide variety of options across our centres:
- Yoga and Pilates: Calm the mind, stretch the body, and build strength through mindful movement.
- Swimming: A low-impact exercise that soothes muscles, eases tension, and helps clear the mind.
- Group exercise classes: From high-energy Spin to dance workouts, our classes combine fitness with fun and connection.
- Gentle fitness sessions: Our accessible classes make it easy for everyone to move more and feel better, no matter their ability or experience.
Each session supports both physical and mental wellbeing, helping members leave feeling refreshed, focused, and positive.

A Community That Cares
Mental health is at the heart of the Horizon community. Our focus on inclusion, wellbeing, and genuine connection means you will always find support here. Whether you are chatting to a team member, joining a group class, or simply taking time out to move your body, there is always someone ready to encourage you.
We also care deeply about our own team’s wellbeing. By creating a workplace built on respect, recognition, and purpose, we ensure our staff can support our community with empathy and energy. At Horizon, the mental health benefits of exercise are not just something we talk about. They are something we live every day.
Take the First Step
On World Mental Health Day, we encourage everyone to take one small step for their wellbeing. That could mean trying a new class, visiting the Wellness Hub, or simply going for a walk with a friend. Every step matters.
Horizon Leisure is here to walk alongside you. Together, we can make mental health and wellbeing a priority, not just on World Mental Health Day, but every day of the year. Find out more about our Wellness Hub and explore our full timetable of classes on our website.
