Celebrating Earth Day with a Step Towards a Greener Future at Horizon Waterlooville

This week we celebrated Earth Day, a global reminder of the importance of protecting our planet and making choices that support a more sustainable future. At Horizon Waterlooville, we took the opportunity to reflect on the steps we’re taking to reduce our environmental impact, including the recent installation of solar panels at the centre.
Mike Lyons, CEO of Horizon Leisure, says:
“This investment in solar energy is a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainability. At Horizon Leisure, we are always looking for innovative ways to enhance our facilities while reducing our environmental impact. The installation of solar panels at Waterlooville Leisure Centre will not only cut carbon emissions but also help us manage rising energy costs, ensuring that we can continue providing accessible, high-quality leisure services for our community.
We are incredibly grateful for the support from Sport England and Havant Borough Council, which enables us to future proof our centres while staying true to our mission of improving the health and wellbeing of residents. This project reflects our dedication to creating a more sustainable future while keeping our facilities affordable and welcoming for everyone.”

Since going live on 10th December, the solar panels have already made a significant impact:
- Saved 1,410.87 kg of CO₂ emissions – the equivalent of planting 85.63 trees
- Produced 7.3 MWh of energy, saving £1,679 to date
- Estimated to generate 240,531 kWh in the first year
While Earth Day might just be a one day celebration, our commitment to sustainability continues every day. We’re proud to take steps that support a healthier planet while providing accessible, high quality leisure services for our community.
