Starting Your Fitness Journey with a Horizon Membership: Which Path is Right for You?
When you sign up for a Horizon membership, you’ll be offered three pathways to help you get started on your fitness journey:
- PT Introduction – Work with a personal trainer to get expert guidance tailored to your goals.
- Gym Programme – Get a personalised workout plan with our gym instructors.
- Group Exercise Introduction – Explore our group classes and find the perfect fit for you.
If you’re confident in your fitness experience, you also have the option to go it alone. However, for beginners or those unsure of how to begin, these introductions can be extremely beneficial in building confidence and providing structure. This guide will outline each of these options to help new members decide on the best approach for their fitness goals.
PT Introduction
For those seeking personalised guidance, the Personal Training Introduction is an excellent way to start. Horizon has a team of highly qualified Personal Trainers who specialise in different areas of fitness, ensuring that members can find a trainer suited to their specific goals.
The first PT taster session is complimentary, providing an opportunity to experience one-on-one coaching before deciding whether to continue with personal training. The session begins with a consultation, during which the trainer will discuss fitness goals, previous experience, and any concerns the individual may have. This is followed by a guided session in the gym, where the trainer will introduce exercises that align with the member’s goals while demonstrating proper techniques and equipment usage.
Beyond learning exercises, this session allows the trainer to assess the member’s current fitness level, which can be useful if they choose to continue with personal training. Having professional support can help individuals feel more confident when trying new training methods, such as strength training or boxing. Additionally, working with a PT provides an extra layer of motivation and accountability, making it easier to stay on track.

Gym Programme
For those looking for structure without committing to personal training, the Gym Programme Introduction provides a comprehensive, instructor led session. These one-on-one sessions are led by Gym Instructors, who are available on the gym floor and easily identifiable in their orange uniforms.
The session begins with a conversation about the member’s current fitness level, experience with gym equipment, and personal fitness goals. Based on this discussion, the Gym Instructor will issue you an exercise programme card, which will serve as a personalised training log. The instructor will then take the member through the gym, demonstrating how to use different machines and equipment correctly. Depending on the member’s preferences and fitness goals, the focus may be on cardio machines, assisted weight machines, free weights, or a combination of all three.
At the end of the session, the member will have a structured workout plan recorded on their exercise programme card, including details on exercises, weights, and recommended durations. To ensure continued progress, a six week check in can be scheduled, allowing the Gym Instructor to assess improvements and make necessary adjustments to the programme.

Group Exercise Introduction
For those who prefer a more social and engaging workout experience, the Group Exercise Introduction offers a structured approach to joining fitness classes. Like the Gym Programme Introduction, this is a personalised, one-on-one session led by a Gym Instructor.
During this session, the instructor will discuss the member’s interests and preferences, helping them explore the wide range of group exercise classes available at Horizon. Members who are unsure about which classes to attend will receive guidance on the different types offered, including strength based, high intensity, holistic, martial arts inspired, cycling, and dance.
The introduction will take place in our Class Zone, a designated area within the gym that features all the necessary equipment for various group classes. The instructor will provide hands on demonstrations of equipment such as setting up spin bikes and barbells, ensuring that the member feels comfortable before attending a class.
As part of this introduction, the member will receive a programme card outlining relevant class information, including schedules and setup details. The card also has QR codes that link to additional information about our class types and timetables. To make the process easier, the instructor will also assist with booking classes through the Horizon app.
