Beat the Blues: How You Can Combat Blue Monday
Blue Monday, often referred to as the most depressing day of the year, falls on the third Monday of January- this year landing on the 20th. Known for its association with low energy, lack of motivation, and feelings of sadness, it’s a day that many find challenging. At Horizon, we acknowledge that feeling blue isn’t just something that happens on a random Monday in January, but we want to take it as an opportunity to focus on self care. That’s why we’re sharing practical ways to boost your mood, stay active, and beat the blues this Blue Monday and for the rest of the year ahead.
Stay Active
Physical activity is a proven mood booster because of the endorphins it releases. Whether it’s a high intensity circuits class, workout in the gym or leisurely swim, staying active will act as a healthy distraction and combat the feelings that are often associated with Blue Monday. Start your morning with a Yoga class to set you up for the day ahead, helping you to focus your mind, decrease the stress you may be feeling and increase mental clarity.
Take Part in Brew Monday
Make this Blue Monday the time to reach out to a friend or family for a cuppa and a catch up. Reaching out to someone and checking in with them can mean a lot to someone who is feeling low and going through a difficult time, as well as giving you an opportunity to open up about how you’re feeling. Places locally may also be hosting a Brew Monday event including other like minded people from within your community. Horizon cafe is the perfect place to catch up with a coffee after a workout, class or swim.
Embrace Self Care
Take this opportunity to dedicate a day to self care and doing things that you enjoy. Carve out some time to read a book, take a relaxing bath or doing a hobby that you are passionate about. This can significantly improve mood and help you to switch off after a long day at work. Make self care a priority, not just on Blue Monday, but at all times.
Nutrition and Healthy Habits
Eating well can have a big impact on how you feel. Simple swaps, like choosing whole grains, fresh fruits, and protein rich meals, can make a difference in your energy levels. Pair good nutrition with regular hydration and proper sleep to help keep those winter blues at bay.
Blue Monday is the perfect opportunity to prioritise taking a step toward a more active and positive lifestyle. Sign up for a class, head to the gym, practice self care, and cook yourself a nutritious meal. We are here to support you at Horizon as a valued member of our community. On the 20th January only, we are running a Bring a Friend for Free offer, so you can use physical activity as a way to boost your mood whilst checking in with one of your friends. Let us help you beat the blues, not just on Blue Monday, but for the rest of 2025 and make it a year of motivation, growth, and prioritising wellbeing!
