Why everyone should learn to swim!

Learn to swim with Horizon Leisure Centre

The summer holidays are officially here and the sun is well and truly out! If you’re looking for ways to keep the family entertained in this heat then why not think about taking a quick dip in the sea or pool? But, how can you enjoy all the amazing benefits and fun of the water, if you or your family can’t swim?

Did you know the national curriculum requirement for all primary school children is to be able to swim 25m unaided? But, just over a quarter of the British population cannot swim to a primary school standard. Here are our top reasons why we think everyone should have swimming lessons and learn how to swim!

Personal Safety

According to the World Health Organisation around 10 people die from unintentional drowning a day. It is very likely that at some point in your life you will find yourself in or near water and knowing how to swim really could save your life.

Great full body work out

Swimming is one of the few exercises that works out your entire body! Not only does it tone your muscles but swimming is great cardio that really gets your heart pumping, makes you fitter, helps you burn more calories and of course it’s great for weight loss.

Family Fun

Looking for a fun activity that the whole family can get involved in? Look no further, swimming is a great activity for all ages. At Horizon we have lots of public swim sessions that anyone can attend.

Lifelong skill

They say swimming is like riding a bike – once you have that skill, you never forget it! That’s even more of a reason to get your little ones signed up to swim lessons as it’s a skill they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

It’s good for your mental health

There are many day to day things that can stress you out, make you sad and cause you to worry and some of these things are unfortunately unavoidable. But, regular swimming is proven to lower stress levels and help reduce blood pressure, anxiety and depression. So if you’re looking for something to give you that feel good factor then swimming may well be for you.

It lowers the risk of some diseases

Research suggests that swimming just 30 minutes a week can help to guard against heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes.

Well, there you have it, swimming really is a great skill to have. If you need that help to become water confident, no matter what your age, then our expert swim teachers are here to help.
