Exercise Referral Scheme a Success at Horizon Gym

June 9th 2015

Horizon Leisure Centres’ Exercise Referral Scheme is seeing some fantastic results.

The scheme which started in September 2014 and is in partnership with Havant Borough Council, The Macmillan Centre and Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has 45 members signed up to improve their health and lifestyle.

Horizon Gym Manager said ‘Since we set up the referral scheme, we have managed to build relationships with many local GP surgeries, the Physiotherapy Centre at Queen Alexandra Hospital which specialise with brain injury and stroke patients and the Macmillan Centre who refer patients to us after they have completed their cancer treatment and need guidance in becoming fitter and stronger again.

All partnerships have been very successful and referrals are strong. We have helped some fantastic patients and I personally feel the difference I have seen in them has been amazing. Stacey Hewson, our Gym Team Leader at Havant is the Exercise Referral Instructor and focuses on the patients’ needs devising the correct programme to suit each individual perfectly.

We have seen some great results from her programmes and the feedback Stacey always receives is brilliant. Due to the success of this scheme, Havant Borough Council have awarded us funding to train up two new Exercise Referral Instructors to support our busy scheme at Havant and will also help to start the scheme up at Waterlooville in the near future. This is thanks to Nicki Conyard, the Community Team Leader from Havant Borough Council who has been supportive throughout the set-up of the scheme and enabled us to expand.’

Judith Trewick thanked Horizon ‘Many thanks for guiding me through the referral scheme. You have given me the confidence and encouragement to continue with my exercise programme. I was really impressed with your thoughtfulness with regards to my limitations and your positive, professional attitude. The scheme is really excellent I will definitely be mentioning to my G.P when visiting’

Another participant, Rowan, added ‘I never thought that going to the gym a couple of times a week would have such a difference to my medical condition or my life. My consultant is delighted and whilst my asthma will always be severe and difficult to manage and there isn’t a cure, attending the gym has kept me out of A&E, reduced my sickness record and made it easier for me to pin down my symptoms and establish what has been triggering my condition than has been historically possible. The support I have had from my physiotherapist, my personal trainer and the staff at the gym has been absolutely fantastic in supporting me through to making these changes. I am so much happier.’

Howard Broad, Horizon LC Chief Executive said ‘We are very pleased with the results that the scheme has produced so far. As a charity we aim to ‘make life better’ for our customers and this is a project we support whole heartedly. With the new gym opening later this summer at Waterlooville we will be looking at extending the scheme and helping the community have a healthy and active lifestyle. ’

The scheme is currently only available at the Havant Gym but will be available at Waterlooville soon. For further information on the Referral Scheme and the Waterlooville Leisure Centre extension visit www.horizonlc.com.
