Dealing with Gym Nerves

For those of you who haven’t yet stepped in a gym, we totally understand how nerve wracking it can be at first. We mean how the hell are you meant to lift those really heavy weights ‘like everyone else’? Also, what on earth are you meant to do with the funky looking machines you hear everybody rave about? Basically, where do you start? Let us give you a few top tips on how to calm those wobbly knees in order to start your journey to a better you!

1.Treat yourself  To some new gym workout gear. You don’t need to break the bank but maybe a new pair of trainers, some new shorts and top, something that’s going to give you a little confidence boost before you’ve even stepped through the door! When you’re feeling good, you will automatically feel more confident and less nervous.

2.Believe in yourself You are there to improve YOU, whether that be mind or body and that in its self is an achievement, it’s important to recognise the little and not so obvious things and not be too hard on yourself. So give yourself a good old pat on the back and remember you’re already making great progress for stepping out of that comfort zone.

3.Bring a friend Did you know Horizon offer ‘Free Fitness Fridays’ where Platinum members can bring a friend absolutely free to workout with you on a Friday between 10am and 10pm! Amazing right? Bringing a friend to start your gym journey with, even if just one day a week, can really help to kick those gym nerves! After all, it’s better to feel ‘silly’ with your bestie than on your own.

4.Book in with a personal trainer Personal trainers know their way round the gym with their eyes closed, so if you’re feeling like you want to make a dash straight back home, then it may well be worth a PT! Personal Trainers will set goals that are personal to you and help you to feel more confident and comfortable when working out.

5.Map out what you’re doing before There’s nothing worse than going to the gym totally unorganised when you’re already feeling nervous, it’s just not going to work. Write in your phone or your diary what you plan on doing and use it as a distraction from your worries and really focus on your pre written plan.

With those 5 top tips in mind we hope to have given you a little push in the right direction and remember, everyone is there for the same reason and that’s to be the best version of themselves. If you do catch someone looking at you, it’s probably because they feel the same and want to copy you!
