Nervous About Joining a Gym? Try Before You Commit
Written by Abigael Wilson
If the thought of walking into a new gym for the first time makes you want to turn around and go home, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common reasons people put off joining somewhere, not the exercise itself, but the fear of feeling out of place, not knowing where anything is, or committing to something before you’re sure it’s right for you.
That’s exactly why we’ve opened up a free trial at Horizon Guildford, running throughout August.
Why New Gyms Feel Intimidating
It’s rarely about fitness level. It’s the unknowns. Where the changing rooms are, how the equipment works, whether everyone else already knows each other, whether you’ll feel comfortable in a class full of regulars. All of that adds up before you’ve even signed up, let alone stepped onto the gym floor.
At Horizon Guildford, the building itself is signposted clearly, gym, swim, studio and spa, so finding your way around isn’t something you need to work out on the day. And with 80+ classes running every week, there’s always a range of levels and styles, not just one intimidating room full of people who’ve been coming for years.

A Low Pressure Way To Find Out
A free trial removes the biggest barrier, the commitment. You get a full day to use our multi storey gym, with its own dedicated cardio, strength and functional zones, so you’re not stuck trying to find space among equipment you don’t recognise. If classes feel like a step too far on day one, that’s completely fine, plenty of people start with a swim in our pool instead, or simply spend their time in the sauna and steam room.
It’s the difference between deciding based on a guess, and deciding based on actually knowing what it’s like, in the actual space you’d be using.

What’s Included
Your free trial day at Horizon Guildford includes:
- Full access to our multi storey gym
- A swim in our heated pool
- The chance to try one of our 80+ weekly classes, including Les Mills, with something suited to every level
- Time in our sauna and steam room, a good option if you’d rather ease in gently
- A chance to try the Brass Monkey Cold Plunge, no booking required
You’re welcome to use as much or as little of it as you like. Some people come in with a plan, others just want to see the space and get a feel for it before deciding what to try.
No pressure, No Obligation
At the end of your trial day, there’s no pressure to decide there and then. If you loved it, our team’s happy to talk through membership options.
On top of that, August tends to be quieter. With more people away or taking time off, the gym itself is naturally less busy than it is come September. If part of what’s holding you back is the thought of a packed gym full of regulars, this is a genuinely easier month to walk in for the first time.
Ready To Try It For Yourself?
If you’ve been putting off joining a gym because you’re not sure it’s right for you, or you’re just not ready for a big commitment yet, this is a genuinely easy way to find out.
The free trial runs throughout August, no guessing, no pressure, just a real day to see how it feels before life gets busy again.
