What Can and Can’t My Child Bring Into Créche?

Written by Abigael Wilson

If your little one is heading into our creche with a snack in hand, it’s worth knowing what’s welcome and what isn’t. With allergies affecting so many children, we ask all parents and carers to follow a few simple guidelines, helping us keep every child in our care safe.

Here’s a quick guide to what’s permitted, and what to leave at home.

Foods That Aren’t Permitted

To protect children with allergies, the following items must not be brought into the setting:

  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (e.g. almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts)
  • Peanut butter or nut spreads
  • Nut-containing snack bars
  • Products labelled “may contain…”, where this indicates an allergen
  • Sesame products (e.g. tahini or sesame snack bars)
  • Home-baked goods
  • Chocolate, cakes, sweets, or celebration foods
  • Mixed-ingredient foods without full ingredient labels

We know these are common lunchbox staples, so if you’re used to packing them, it might take a little adjusting, but it makes a real difference to the children in our care who have allergies.

Foods That Are Permitted

The good news is there’s still plenty your child can bring along. The following simple, low-risk items are permitted:

  • Fruit (fresh, dried & pureed)
  • Vegetables
  • Yogurt (plain & fruit flavoured)
  • Breadsticks
  • Rice cakes (plain & flavoured, not topped or coated)
  • Crackers (plain & lightly buttered)

Why We Ask This of Parents

Allergies can be serious, and even small amounts of certain ingredients can pose a real risk to some children. By keeping snacks simple and following full ingredient labelling, we can create a safer space for every child who comes through our doors, not just your own.

If you’re ever unsure whether something is suitable, our creche team is always happy to help, just ask before you pack the bag.

Thank you for helping us keep creche a safe, happy place for everyone.
