Horizon’s Free Open Day at Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres

Waterlooville Leisure Centre Open Day – Saturday 30th July 16 – 10am – 4pm
Havant Leisure Centre Open Day – Saturday 13th August 16 – 10am – 4pm

To help celebrate the 2016 Olympics, and to encourage greater participation in sporting activities, Horizon Leisure Centres will be holding two Open Days this summer at Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres. The days will give the local community a chance to sample some of the many facilities and activities on offer at the centres.

The sessions will be free of charge and will run at different times throughout the day to allow people to drop in and have a go. Sessions will include activities in the pools and play centres, plus exercise classes and sports sessions.

Over the last few years Horizon Leisure Centres has invested heavily in refurbishing facilities and providing developments to both of the centres.

Havant Leisure Centre opened a brand new gym in summer 2014 and recently the play centre has been refurbished to become Horizon Oceans of Play, a fun ocean themed indoor play centre. Waterlooville Leisure Centre was given a massive extension in summer 2015 which saw the opening of a new three-storey gym, exercise studio, World of Play indoor play centre, themed to different countries around the world, and a café.

Both gyms are award winning, with Havant gym holding the Gym of the Year title in 2015 and Waterlooville taking over the mantel for Gym of the Year in 2016. Over the period of the Open Days, a special time-limited membership promotion will be running to encourage more people to become more active!

Horizon Leisure Centres is a registered charity and a not-for-profit social enterprise with a vision to make life better for our local communities. Any surplus it makes is reinvested in improving the facilities and keeping entrance fees low.

Horizon’s Chief Executive, Howard Broad, said “The Open Days provide a fantastic opportunity for those in the community unfamiliar with the wide-range of leisure facilities and activities we offer, to come in and have a look around and take part in an activity free of charge. Hopefully, people will enjoy the experience and want to return to take-up regular exercise, which will help improve their fitness, health and well-being”.

Horizon Leisure Centre Car Winner Donates 3 Cows to Tanzania Orphanage

Bianca Carr, a 33 year-old member of Horizon Leisure Centres, collected her new Hyundai i10 from Waterlooville Leisure Centre on Friday 26th February 2016 after winning the Horizon Platinum Membership Competition.

To win the Hyundai i10 and 5 years warranty, supplied by Richmond Hyundai Portsmouth Platinum Members at Horizon Leisure Centres had to join the most friends and/or family on a Platinum Membership by 31st January 2016.

Bianca said ‘I am so happy to have won the Hyundai i10, me and my husband share a car at the moment which can be difficult at times. He has to cycle to work from Emsworth to Portsmouth and he isn’t enjoying it this winter!’

‘We decided that we needed to get a second car and so have been saving up for a new car and had so far managed to save £3,000, but now we don’t need to keep saving up as I have won a new Hyundai i10!’

Bianca told Horizon that because she felt so lucky to have won the car she has spent the £3,000 that she had saved to support an orphanage in Tanzania, by buying 2 pairs of milk cows. It now means the children that live there will have fresh milk.

Carl Shear, Operations Manager at Horizon said ‘Bianca is not only a well-deserved winner with great competitive spirit getting all her family and friends involved but also has a huge heart for donating her savings to Tanzania.’

Bianca has been a Platinum Member at Horizon Leisure Centres since 21st July 2014. She was very pleased to see the return of the competition in 2015 however doubted that she would be in with a chance of winning.

The first person that Bianca signed up was her husband. She then managed to convince her husband’s parents to become members. Eventually Bianca managed to sign up the most members, a mix of her family members and her friends, making her the competition winner.

Michael Nobes, Managing Director at Richmond Hyundai in Portsmouth said ‘We were more than happy to support Horizon after we heard about this great competition. We hope Bianca enjoys her new i10 and 5 years warranty!’

All members who entered the competition tried extremely hard to win the brand new Hyundai i10, the leader board was very competitive towards the end of the competition with members trying extra hard to persuade their friends and family to join up.

Horizon Leisure Centres strive to always fulfil their vision ‘making life better for all users’ and by giving their members the chance to win the new Hyundai i10 it was an opportunity to give back to their members.

Fun Club

Picture: Customers from the Fun Club at Havant Leisure Centre pleased with the news.

Horizon Leisure Centres, the Charity that operates both Havant and Waterlooville Leisure Centres, has announced that admission charges to both Centres are to be frozen for 2016.

Traditionally Horizon’s charges are adjusted in January each year but following a review by their Board of Trustees the decision was made not to increase general pay-as-you-go admission charges as part of their charitable objectives to get more people using the Leisure Centres.

The Charity’s Chief Executive, Howard Broad said “The purpose of the Charity is to provide high quality leisure facilities at affordable prices for the communities of Havant and Waterlooville and beyond.

The decision to freeze prices will be good news for our customers, it will help increase usage of the Centres and will encourage more people in the community, to become more active, more often”.

As a charity Horizon Leisure Centres’ provides a range of targeted programmes to meet the community needs these include daily teen (aged 10 – 15) gym sessions. ‘MEND’ children’s exercise and anti-obesity clinics, exercise referral schemes and cancer rehabilitation through exercise.

With parent and baby swimming lessons, Fun Club for 50+ and over 70 other activities Horizon provides something for everyone. Fun Club customers were ecstatic to hear the news and hope that it will encourage more people to join.

Doug, 87, a member of the Fun Club at Horizon said ‘I am so pleased to hear the prices are not increasing in 2016. I am 87 and still swim at the Leisure Centre most mornings.

It is wonderful to come to the Fun Club every week and have fun with friends playing badminton, table tennis and socialising while still keeping fit in old age. The centre is the hub of the community’.

Horizon is continuing its commitment in 2016 to provide fully inclusive centres accessible by everyone including supporting people with additional needs from supported-swimming to weekly sessions in the Indoor Play Centres as well as badminton lessons.

Over the past 18-months, Horizon has invested heavily in improving the Leisure Centres by opening two massive new gyms, a new children’s play centre (‘World of Play’ at Waterlooville), two new dance studios, a café and improved car parking and now offer over 20 facilities.

They Mayors Day

September 4th 2015

On Friday 4th September Horizon was part of the exciting Civic Day in which 10 mayors from other local authorities visited Waterlooville Leisure Centre.

The Civic Day is an annual event where the Mayor showcases what is great about their community to other mayors from local authorities.

We were delighted to have the Mayors come to Waterlooville Leisure Centre after being asked by Leah Turner, Mayor of Havant in August.

Mayors from other boroughs got the chance to see what has been happening at Waterlooville Leisure Centre, how we operate as a charity and have been able to reinvest in the Centers without funding from the Council.

On their arrival the Mayors joined the Trustees of Horizon Leisure Centres and Horizon Staff in the Café area to hear from the Chief Executive Howard Broad.

Howard gave them an introduction to Waterlooville Leisure Centre and Horizon Trust which included the history of the Leisure Centre and where we are today.

The Mayor of Havant said ‘Horizon World of Play is my favourite place in the Leisure Centre.’ The Mayors spoke to the customers as they went round. Who were really complimentary about the facilities.

Jodie a parent in Horizon World of Play (Indoor Play Centre) said ‘I love the play area at Waterlooville, the children have so much fun and I can in grab a coffee and have a catch up whilst they play.’

They were taken-back by the amazing light and spacious feeling of the gym as soon as they stepped through the door. Many of them said that they had never visited a Gyms like this one and that they were extremely impressed at what we had achieved in there.

The Mayors said the gym had a great atmosphere and equipment, some of them even had a go on the equipment!

They were impressed about the pools and the spectator area that allows Waterlooville to host large swimming galas for groups across Hampshire.

The Mayors were really positive and excited about what they had been shown on the tours

They had refreshments in the café before going off onto their next visit in the Borough.

Waterlooville Gym Now Open

Horizon Leisure Centres opened its new three-storey gym and 50-capacity studio today at Waterlooville Leisure Centre.

The gym is part of the long awaited two-phase extension plan that will increase and improve the range of leisure facilities available to the community which is set to transform the Waterlooville Leisure Centre originally built in 1991.

Howard Broad, Chief Executive of Horizon Leisure Centres said ‘Having opened a hugely successful new gym at Havant Leisure Centre last July, I am extremely proud to be opening another fantastic new gym within a year at our Waterlooville Centre.

The uniquely designed gym and studio at Waterlooville is part of a 3 million pound extension that will also see a fabulous new indoor children’s play centre (called World of Play) open in July as well as a Cafe and fully refurbished main reception area.

To help meet the expected increase in usage customers will be pleased to know that significantly more parking spaces is being provided.

As a charity, we are dedicated to improving and developing our leisure centres in order to enable more people to become more active more often and to ‘Make Life Better’ for our users.”

The fantastic new air-conditioned gym contains over 150 state-of-the-art work stations from leading equipment supplier Life Fitness. The modern naturally-lit gym will enable users to improve their health and fitness levels with supportive instructors guiding individuals through their fitness journey to reach their personal goals.

The cardio-vascular area has treadmills, stationary bicycles, rowers, cross trainers, exciting new Power Mills and two new everlasting staircases. Resistance equipment covers every muscle group in the body and comprises a great selection of free-weight machines and weights alongside a functional training area.

The spacious new air-conditioned exercise studio means there will be a bigger and wider range of group fitness classes. Horizon Leisure Centres have programmed a wide-range of over 50 classes a week at Waterlooville Leisure Centre with pay-as-you-go options making the classes accessible for everyone.

Harry Abbott a member Horizon Leisure Centre said “Having been a member of Waterlooville Leisure Centre since December 2014, I am extremely excited for the opening of the new gym and the additional facilities it will bring.

The greater selection of free-weight machines and weights will be particularly useful. It will be motivating to have new equipment to incorporate into my work outs to ensure I can constantly challenge myself and push towards achieving my fitness goals.”

Despite the significant investment made by Horizon, membership prices have been frozen in order to encourage greater participation and help improve the health and well-being of the community.
